Surf 's up for Deion in her new tranquil beach retreat with surfboard, furry sensory chair and lots and lots of colorful pom poms! We're pretty confident that Deion will be having sweet dreams in her new special space.
Deion is her Mommy's miracle! The doctors told her parents she was terminal and wouldn't survive... but fourteen years later she is alive, happy, and lighting up rooms with her infectious smile and loveable hugs! Deion was nominated by her nursing agency and they told us all about the "Deion smile" and look in her eyes when she finds something that makes her happy. Our team got to witness that amazing face on the reveal of her room and it was priceless! We loved to see her smiling, bouncing on the bed and waving at herself in her new mirror. It was a priceless reaction and what the team had hoped for!
Deion has Ebstein's anomaly, Cardiomegaly, seizure activity and a host of other challenges but you wouldn't know it by her happy gait and her pervasive smile. She has survived a lot of obstacles in her life and has proved to her parents that the impossible is possible. Her younger sister, Maya, is a big protector and advocate for her sister and we can see that Deion is surrounded with love.
Despite Deion's challenges, Mom and Dad are very vigilant with her care ensuring she receives everything she needs to live a full and happy life. They are wonderful advocates and they inspire us with their devotion.
We hope this new space will provide Deion with a place to relax, have quiet time, and to recover on the harder days when her body and mind need rest and comfort.
Thank you PaintGreen for providing us with the perfect pop of purple power that created the canvas for our over-the-top girlie room. Thank you Mark and team from Mattress Company Direct for the beautiful Pottery Barn-esque furniture for a quarter of the price! And a special thanks to Bobby for his patience and nimble ability while attaching all of the coloful pop-poms to the incredible 20 foot ceiling! And last but not least, thank you to our devoted Girl Scouts for their contribution of time, talent and love. I think we all have a new appreciation for tissue paper and how easily it can tear! We had a blast working with you girls and we are so proud of your dedication and spirit.
We are grateful to our volunteers who are truly the heart and soul of our organization. Thank you to our donors and supporters for making our 68th room makeover possible!
Thank you to Girl Scout Troop 8634 for helping us complete our 68th makeover for children with special needs in San Diego! We had 6 devoted teens and two wonderful mothers helping us complete the transformation of Deion's room from blank canvas to teen beach scene!
These teens immediately set to work - unloading the truck, applying decals, crafting and making perfect pom poms to suspend from the ceiling. From cleaning to making beds, these teenage girls were devoted volunteers. We feel so lucky to be working with today's youth on projects like this that make our community stronger.
