Eric's Story
Eric is a sweet and loveable eight-year old boy who loves animals, art and his books. He is very smart and a whiz on the computer! Eric was diagnosed with autism at an early age and was non-verbal until this past year when he began expressing a few words. His family was thrilled! Thanks to the love and devotion of Mom, Myrna, Dad, Victor, and little brother Niko, Eric is thriving! His family is loving, patient, supportive and committed to providing him with everything he needs to reach his full potential. Like many of the children receiving makeovers from Cecily's Closet, the new room was a bit of shock! Eric was a little overwhelmed upon the reveal, but we've since heard from his dear Mom that he is now enjoying is special space! (He just needed his computer to be back up and running!) He traces the waves with his finger and says "waves"! We hope he has many happy days reading books, playing on his computer, and relaxing on his new big boy bed!
Thanks to Cynthia from Trick my Crib, and Grace Ann, from Murals by Grace Ann, for helping Cecily's Closet to transform Eric's room into a beach retreat. Cynthia's design was fun and modern that capitalized on Eric's love of the ocean. With its bright colors and custom art, the room popped with color and fun. Grace Ann added a beautiful and whimsical wave pattern around the room to bring the room to life. Together, the room was a combination of function and fun, with lots of storage for Eric's amazing book collection! Eric is just one of thousands of children with special needs in San Diego. Raising autism awareness is an even more important task now that one in 110 children in the United States are on the autism spectrum. While an increase in healthcare professionals’ knowledge about autism spectrum disorders and how it manifests in children may be responsible for the increase in reported autsim rates, it is not the sole reason. Is there an answer to “What causes autism?” Unfortunately, the answer is still a mystery but with proactive parents, supportive therapists and lots of love, we're optimstic that the constant flood of research being completed will help to find the answers parents and caregivers seek.
Thank you to our generous donors for making Eric's "Sweet Dreams" makeover come true!
