Matthew's Story
All Aboard! All Aboard! This train is headed for Matthew's new Choo Choo room courtesy of Climbing the Walls!
Matthew was diagnosed with autism as a toddler. At 18 months he stopped talking and his parents knew something wasn't right. His Mom, Rose, wouldn't take no for an answer and kept pushing until she got her son the services he needed to grow and develop. With the support of El Camino Pediatrics and the referral for early intervention services, Matthew began to make strides forward. Now four, Matthew is an adorable, active and talkative little boy with a big love for trains! He has a bright future ahead and we're excited to be able to give him a room with some art to inspire him on his journey!
Cecily's Closet receives more requests for Sweet Dream room makeovers than we could ever hope to fund. Since we seem to be more successful in reaching out to local artists who support our mission, we've decided to scale back some of our room makeovers and put the focus on the one thing that all of the children respond to, the art. Thanks to our team of partners and contributing artists, we are now able to offer, "Art Makes a Difference" project.
Cherie, owner of Climbing the Walls, really listened to Matthew's feedback and incorporated his desires into the room! Cherie's unique style combines custom-designed stencils with a light sponge painting technique to create classical elements with a timeless and tasteful look. Matthew was definitely the conductor on this operation and we are pretty sure he is sleeping soundly in his new train sheets tonight!
Today's project was such a success that we'll be moving full-steam ahead with a few more, "Art Makes a Difference" projects to complement our "Sweet Dream" makeover program. At the end of the day, the kids get the most impact and joy from the art provided by our team of talented stencilists, artists, muralists and designers. Thank you to Cherie, owner of Climbing the Walls, for helping us expand our program to serve more children.
Cecily's Closet left a few personal touches behind for Matthew, including: new train sheets and comfy bedding, curtains, a train set, and a flashing railroad crossing sign piggy bank!
We would also like to recognize Gina E. for her continual support! She is a wonderful project manager and an asset to our volunteer crew. Thank you for working hard to support our mission of spreading hope to so many families in San Diego.
This train has left the station! Choo Choo!
