Princess Miriam's Frozen bedroom: A Partnership with DS Action
"Some people are worth melting for." These are the words spoken by Olaf, the snowman from Frozen. And sweet little Miriam, our latest Sweet Dreams Makeover recipient, definitely made our hearts melt over and over!
How did this Frozen room come to be? It all started with a generous donor. Last year at the annual Down Syndrome Action Merry All Comedy Ball, DS Action VP Sharla Hank challenged a generous, anonymous donor to help the Rady Children's Hospital Down Syndrome Clinic make a difference in the life of a child. Jagger and Kristi, the energetic husband and wife team of 92.5 FM's morning show, chose the lucky recipient from a hat of nominated families. Miriam was the lucky winner, chosen to receive a simple artistic makeover by Inside Emily Dolton's Head. Sharla Hank then requested to nominate the families that were not drawn for a Cecily's Closet room makeover. (One of these families has already received a Cecily's Closet room!)
As most parents of children with special needs know, life can throw you challenges from time to time and you have to roll with the punches. Miriam, a beautiful little lady with Down Syndrome, has had her share of medical issues including a congenital heart issue often associated with Down Syndrome and sleep apnea. Sometimes, however, the punches aren't medical and aren't even about special needs.
Miriam's mom Leticia had been waiting for the right opportunity to buy a house; and when the time came for Miriam's makeover, they were getting ready to move. As luck would have it, that home didn't work out and the makeover was again put on hold. When the perfect home was found, Miriam's mom knew she'd have to begin to look for new furniture for Miriam to have her own room. The scope of what was originally planned changed drastically and the timeline was stepped up to a few days; so Emily Dolton enlisted the help of Cecily's Closet.
Mattress Company Direct was able to turn around the delivery of a cute little bedroom set fit for a princess with just a few days' notice! Miriam is a big fan of the movie Frozen, so Emily set about creating hardboard murals, painting walls and finding bedding and coordinating pieces. Lisa Beard donated coordinating accessories. A flooring company advertising on Craig's List had fabric remnants for free and a new carpet was snapped up for free for Miriam's floor by Mom. We added storage ottomans for seating, toys and a few dress up elements that any true princess needs!
Miriam, who had been chatting all day, was speechless when she first entered the room. Despite her best efforts to peek - the team was able to keep the little princess at bay until the big reveal! After seeing her new little castle she happily played with her new Elsa and Anna doll,s and even briefly shared her tiara with her mom. It must be stated that she did this all while instructing us to "Let it Go".
Cecily's Closet would once again like to thank the Rancho Sante Fe Woman's Club for their generous donation that is allowing us to make a difference in so may lives this year!
