Go Cecily Go! Day one of crawling on all fours...

Go Cecily! Cheers, applause, smiles and a whole lot of celebrating tonight in the Ackerly house.  For a long time Cecily has been mobile. She started with rolling. She could roll faster than a penny down a hill if she was motivated.  Then came the army crawl. It was slow and steady and she fought for every inch. (The negative voices and non-believers said she was sliding on the floor... but I KNEW she was working so hard to pull her tiny body forward.) It was beautiful to watch and to see Noah cheer her on and shout like a maniac - just like Mom and Dad. We celebrated! Then the army crawl became so strong we thought she may skip the entire crawling phase all together. She could get up and over objects, up and down stairs (with some assistance) and she would not be stopped. Over the last few days we have seen a look of determination in her pretty blue eyes that simply says, "get out of my way... i am going to do this!"  I think she has a hefty dose of the Short/Ackerly competitive drive.  She may have heard a few non-believers recently and that just motivated her to show them what she can do! She is a fierce, stubborn and wildly unpredictable little girl. We love her to pieces.

After spending four hours this morning at Children's I decided to work the rest of the day from home and I am so glad I did! I heard Cecily's wonderful and supportive nurse, Kim, shouting from the play room. "She is crawling! She just crawled..." Of course I was NOT going to miss this. I ran - grabbed the camera - and ran in to the room to see Cecily happy as a clam, proud as a peacock, sitting up.  She repeated her efforts and smiled at the camera (yes - she is a charmer!)  She did it a few more times before going back to her favorite mode of travel, the army crawl.  We KNOW she can do it! She KNOWS she can do it! And if properly motivated, she will continue to do it!  (And yes, we have pictures to prove it!)

As a Mom, a fiercely loyal and wildy protective Mom, I can't stand to hear people tell me what Cecily will and won't do! I'm sorry - do yo have a crystal ball? I remember asking crystal ball questions before and the answer was always the same - time will tell, prognosis... blah blah blah, but there were no answers!  Well the truth is no one really knows!  And that is why HOPE is so important to parents of children with special needs.  You never know when your baby is going to turn around and surprise you. So be ready and never underestimate.  It is so much better to BELIEVE!  So that why I won't tolderate anyonen speaking about Cecily as if she is not in the room or understanding what we are saying. I am convinced she understands everyone that is going on and she is soaking it all in!  I want everyone on Team Cecily to be supportive and to believe. We do! So in our house you are either on the Team Cessy bus or you are off it! There is no room for the doubters on our bus...  Cecily can hear you and pretty soon she will tell you herself...

We are just so proud of her and her supportive brother. Noah has been pushing all of my buttons lately. But... despite his ability to find all of my Mommy weaknesses... he remains the number one advocate for Cecily. He was so excited when I picked him up from school and I told him about Cecily's accomplishment. He gets it! He adores Cecily. After all, she is HIS baby... as he corrected me today!

So today we have our first crawling day on all fours. It will take a lot of practice to make this her primary mode of transit. But we will relish the little victory. Life is short. Time for pizza, ice cream and some of those yummy Cadbury eggs that are lining the grocery stores right now... Onwards and upwards!
