To be a Mom

There is no job description that accurately represents  the title of MOM.  You can read every parenting book and magazine, attend seminars and classes, or better yet  listen to your Mom, Grandma or friends who are Moms, but until you hold your baby and gaze into his or her eyes for the first time it is just impossible to comprehend the power and responsibility that comes with the position of MOM.

That said, I know a few things that can help you prepare for being a Mom.  Patience. Love. And most importantly, having a great Mom in your life to help set the bar high and to help drive you to aim higher and support you when you slip.

I am so lucky to have a beautiful, funny, spunky, (very spunky), smart, quirky and above all else - devoted Mom!  There has never been a time in my life where my Mom was not there for me. From morning moments, a gentle ruse she created to wake a not-so-great morning person, to holding countless positions like troop leader, team Mom, tax-driver, seamstress, friend and counselor.  My Mom is never more than a phone call away.  I am so grateful to have her in my life, not just for me, but for my children.  Noah and Cecily adore her.  They have a strong bond and I enjoy watching it grow and develop.

My Mom is an inspiration to me. She encourages me to be my best and to always dream big. She is positive in the face of adversity. She looks for the best in others.  She finds the good in a bad situation and she remains positive while facing one of her toughest battles yet - her own personal fight with cancer.   This past week she had surgery and she is preparing for chemo to start in a few weeks. While this news would be enough to keep many down - my Mom keeps going. I see in her a new strength, a new radiance and a new committment to live life to the fullest.  She is tough and rolls with the punches and encourages everyone to "just get on with it..." which is basically her way of saying shut up and do it baby.

Everyone needs a Cecily in their life. We named baby Cecily after my Mom and we are sure she has my Mom's spirit and spunk.

On this Mother's Day we honor my Mom and all the Moms out there who are doing their best to take care of their kiddos.  It's not easy being a Mom - but I can't imagine my life without the title MOM.

Onwards and upwards!

What a lovely picture of your parents. :) Your mom certainly is is a wonderful woman! I remember many days of her carting us around in the van and making us crumpets after school - such fun days! I didn't know she was battling cancer - we will definitely keep her in our thoughts and prayers. Happy (late) Mother's Day to you both!

You are right! Your mom is so awesome:) You are very lucky to have such a wonderful mother in your life (and we can all see why you've turned into such a fantastic mom yourself). I have a million wonderful memories of your mom, and I'm so thankful I know her:) I can't believe that picture! You are her spitting image- I had to do a double take! I am praying for her during her treatment and thinking of your family.

This moved me. I appreciate how you name the quiet, unseen parts of motherhood—the patience, the do-overs, the forgiving-yourself and trying-again. It’s a reminder that “being a mom” is less about perfection and more about showing up with love, even on the messy days. Thank you for sharing this with such grace.
